Simply put, being a Green Circle Salon means we are a salon that recycles at least 95% of its waste! Yes, you read that right – 95%! This remarkable achievement certifies us as a truly sustainable salon, and it’s a game-changer for our industry and our community.
You might be thinking, “But how can a salon recycle so much?” It’s a great question, and the answer lies in understanding the unique waste challenges salons face.

The Problem with Traditional Salon Waste

Traditionally, much of the waste generated by hair salons—things like hair clippings, metal foils, and leftover chemical color—cannot be treated or processed by most local municipalities. This means that these materials, which can contain chemicals and take centuries to decompose, would end up directly in our landfills and even worse, our waterways. This contributes to pollution and harms our precious environment.

Our Partnership with Green Circle Salons: Turning Waste into Wonder

Thanks to our partnership with Green Circle Salons, we’re transforming what used to be trash into valuable resources. Here’s how we’re making a tangible difference with every visit you make to Josephine’s:

• Hair Clippings: Believe it or not, your snipped strands have incredible potential! We collect all hair clippings, which are then used to create hair booms that help clean up oil spills in our oceans. They can also be repurposed into pillows for international aid efforts, providing comfort where it’s needed most.
• Color Tubes & Used Foils: The metal from your empty color tubes and used foils is meticulously collected and processed to be turned into brand new metal products. This significantly reduces the need for virgin resource extraction.
• Leftover Color: This is one of the most exciting innovations! Instead of rinsing harmful chemicals down the drain, our leftover hair color has its water removed and recycled. The remaining concentrated product is then safely processed and turned into new sources of energy.
• Single-Use Waste: Items like paper towels and wax strips, often destined for landfills, are now collected and subjected to a safe, controlled combustion process that generates energy. This means less waste, more power!
• Unrecyclable Plastics & Old Salon Tools: Plastics that cannot be recycled through local programs, as well as old salon tools and appliances that have reached the end of their life, are also included in the Green Circle Salon partnership. They are meticulously sorted and recycled appropriately, ensuring nothing goes to waste.
